Elimination of bias using automatic content moderation

An effective moderation system is a way to decide which sorts of contribution are unwelcome, obscene or illegal. Different social media websites employ thousands of moderators to make sure that the content they publish is fine with legal regulations and does not violate any freedoms.

As it was already mentioned in previous articles, content moderation can be conducted with the use of human moderators who go through every piece to verify whether or not it complies with the current procedures. Alternatively, it can be also organized in a way the job is done by automatic verifiers – special software that allows hundreds of contributions to be checked out within a couple of seconds. The last one is faster, more effective than humans and can be very helpful in case of the elimination of bias.

Bias elimination

An effective automatic bias elimination tool is of help when detecting unacceptable content and a user that is creating the content before or as soon as it is posted. It can also provide a word filter functionality, in which a list of banned words is kept and maintained. Such a tool can recommend some alternative keywords or replace them with the acceptable ones, or even block the whole post.

Effective moderation system

What is more, such software is able to guide a human moderator by showing the examples of unwanted content, and ask a user or a moderator to moderate an unacceptable post. Finally, it gives other community members an option to post a red flag over the piece that is suspected to be violating the rules.

All the above mentioned features show that an autonomic content moderation tool can be a good thing to eliminate bias. Especially that bias can be understood differently by different people and in general is considered to be sometimes extremely difficult to identify. Taking into account the definition of the term that tells us that “bias is an action supporting or opposing a particular person or thing in an unfair way due to allowing personal opinions to influence a judgement, this phenomenon can be also described as the preference of a particular subject or thing”. Regardless the definition we can however, understand that some pieces of content may not be considered bias by human moderators if they share the same views as the author of the piece.

Due to this reason, an automatic and autonomic system of content moderation can do better and select all the posts that may indicate some kind of unwanted or offensive content. This factor is very important especially for big websites that feature thousands of posts daily. Especially that due to legal regulations, in some countries these websites are obliged to fast reaction to any act of hate speech or obscene content. Artificial intelligence with a human-like accuracy rate can be a very good solution that will save the time and financial resources of website owners and contributors.
